So, what the heck is a New England IPA?

First of all, if your an IPA fan who craves the bitterness of an IPA, you're going to be disappointed.  Maybe not with the taste, but with the lack of bitterness.  New England IPAs are usually not bitter.  To add to that, they are usually hazy or cloudy, which again, goes against what you know of an IPA.  So, if you're going to try a New England IPA, simply throw out the book, raise a glass, and take a sip... or two.

Now, what's in a New England IPA that makes it different?
1.  Water with high chloride levels
2.  Less bitter hops with fruit or citrus characteristics
3.  High protein oats or wheat
4.  High ester-producing yeast

Now, this isn't all that makes a New England IPA taste different and the more brewers that create their own variety, the harder it will be to narrow down what makes it a NEIPA, but one thing is for sure.  If you're not an IPA drinker, give it a try.  You might be surprised.
